genius idea about the funds manager industry/ kiwisaver returns less fees and the investment in the nz govt.
my 2 year old son foolishly choose Gareth Morgan Growth Fund with his free $1000 gift. His balance is sitting at $990 and Gareth has been holidaying around the globe on the fees.
i belittle him to tears every month when his new balance comes out.
Fraser, with ideas like that i’ll vote for you in the upcoming by election.

Hi Anita … Thanks for your comments. Yes, there was mention of a new Earthquake Kiwi Bond that will assist with funding the rebuild of Christchurch. The bond will be sold through the NZ Debt Management Office – and will have an initial return of 4%pa.

Thanks for your comment. Depending on the surrounding facts, this could go either way.

At one end of the continuum, if your property has been tenanted for some years before this issue arose – and the problem was unforeseen when you purchased the property, I would have no problem treating this as repairs and maintenance.

At the other extreme, if you have recently purchased the property in below average condition and have had to replace the leaking hot water cylinder as part of bringing the property up to a reasonable standard to be tenanted, this would more likely be capital expenditure.

Hi,
I have just recently replaced the hot water cylinder because it was leaking and was 45-years old! It cost me about $4300 to replace everything including plumber and electrician’s costs. Am I able to treat this as a repairs and maintenance cost?

Great summary regarding the value of an advisory board to a business. At BNZ Partners, whilst we aren’t true owner operators we do make local strategic decisions to match our local regions. We are also starting to develop the role of a Chairman to support our local Partners teams, in a similar way that an advisory board functions. The appointment of John Bongard as Chair of our Manukau Counties Partners team is the first in this regard. John is ex CEO of Fisher and Paykel Applicanes and will add great strategic strength to Phil Roach’s team at the new Highbrook Centre at East Tamaki.

Greetings Bruce … If a QC makes a loss (eg from property investment or business activity), the ability for that loss to pass through to shareholders will remain. However the government has signalled that losses claimable by each shareholder will be limited to the amount they have “at risk” in the QC. Here’s the big question which we’ll be looking to the upcoming legislation to clarify: “Will personal guarantees for bank debt satisfy the “at risk” requirement for claiming losses?” We’re expecting the answer to be “yes”, in which case the practical impact on people who hold investment properties in QCs will likely be minimal.

From what you are saying from 01 April 2011 LAQC and QC’c will be treated the same. If I am currently running a property through a QC willl I be able to claim losses against PAYE from that date.

It also helps to think about how people read offline. They expect a heading, an intro, subheadings and pictures with captions. Try to lay out your online material in the same way you’d expect to read a magazine. It looks more approachable than a big block of text and it allows people to skim read much faster.

To answer your question, if the 8C Alfa Romeo in the video was purchased new for say US$4,000 in 1933 – and sold for US$4,100,000 in 2010, then it has increased in value on average 9.4% each year.
If only my great-grandfather had had that sort of foresight! But then, as Imogen says, $4,000 was several times the average annual wage back in the 1930′s.

Interesting comments regarding the investment possibilities…
Back in the 80s and even into the 90s, 8C Alfa Romeos were changing hands for 1.5 million GBP, I thought prices returned to earth
since then, but pre war Alfas are obviously still seen as a sound investment…..US$ 4.1million including buyers premium…..Thats NZ$5.8million!….. see link
